Retaining Wall Earthwork
Retaining Wall Base Prep & Excavation in Edison
Edison Excavation does the earthwork that determines whether a retaining wall holds: the benched cut into the slope, the compacted stone base course, and the drainage behind the block. We prepare walls for your builder or hardscaper, and build small gravity walls start to finish where no engineering is needed.
The parts that get buried
Once the wall goes up, the base and drainage are hidden for good. That's why they have to be right the first time.
Cut and Benched to Stay Put
The slope is cut back and benched so the ground holds during the build, and the base trench is dug to depth on laser grade.
A Level Base Course
Crusher run placed and compacted in lifts, then screeded dead level. When the first course goes down fast and true, the rest of the wall follows.
Drainage Behind the Wall
Clean 3/4-inch stone and perforated pipe at the base of the wall, daylighted so water can escape. Walls fail from water pressure, not soil weight.
Excavation partner for wall builders
Many skilled wall builders would rather set block than run machines. We handle the excavation side: cut, bench, trench, base course, drainage, and compacted backfill behind the finished wall. The 5 to 6 ton excavator takes on the larger cuts, and the mini reaches backyards where the slope runs tight to a fence.
Where we work
For garden-scale gravity walls that don't need engineering, we can build the whole wall, base to cap. One straightforward note: in New Jersey, walls taller than about 4 feet usually require an engineered design and a permit. We'll tell you that at the site walk, and we're glad to dig to the engineer's spec once you have one.
What happens after you call
From the site walk to the final cleanup
1. Site Walk
We visit the property by appointment, check access and any constraints, and go over your plans or what you have in mind.
2. Marking & Layout
The layout is set on the ground with laser accuracy. Depths, lines, and elevations are marked before any digging starts.
3. The Work
The right machine for the access comes in, ground protection goes down where needed, and disturbance to lawns, trees, and hardscape is kept to a minimum.
4. Clean Handover
You're left with a site ready for the next step and a yard that's still in one piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
In most NJ towns, walls over about 4 feet, or walls with a load above them like a driveway, need an engineered design and a permit. Below that, a well-built gravity wall usually doesn't. We'll give you an honest read at the site walk, and your township's construction office has the final word.
Water, nearly every time. Without drainage stone and perforated pipe behind it, the wall holds back saturated soil and the pressure pushes it over. A compacted base and a slight lean into the slope handle the rest.
Yes, that's a common setup. We handle excavation, base, and drainage to their spec, coordinate the schedule, and hand over a site their crew can start laying block on. The NJ One Call markout is requested before the trench opens.
