Teardowns & Removals
Demolition in Edison: Houses, Garages & Commercial Buildings
Edison Excavation handles demolition across Edison and the Middlesex and Union County towns north of the Raritan: full houses, detached and attached garages, interior gut-outs, commercial buildings, and backyard removals like sheds, decks, patios, and hot tubs. The structure comes down, debris is sorted and hauled, footings are pulled, and the site is left backfilled and graded for what comes next.

Structures we remove
Each demolition starts the same way: permit secured, utilities disconnected and capped, and the NJ One Call 811 markout requested. Then the right machine for the building.
Full Buildings
Houses, garages, and commercial buildings come down by excavator, get sorted while loading (metal, wood, concrete), and leave by the truckload. Foundations and footings are removed too, unless you're building on them again.
Interior Gut-Outs
Pre-renovation strip-outs: drywall, flooring, fixtures, cabinets, and non-structural walls removed and carried out, with the parts of the building you're keeping protected.
Backyard Structures
Sheds, decks, patios, walkways, hot tubs, and above-ground pools. A tracked skid steer fits through a standard gate, so small structures come out without cutting the fence. Inground pools are covered on their own page.

Gone without a trace
Knocking a structure down is the quick part. A good demolition is judged by what remains: footings pulled rather than buried, debris actually removed rather than pushed into the soil, and the hole backfilled in compacted lifts and graded so it doesn't turn into a dip a couple of winters later.
Where we work
We work throughout Edison and the surrounding towns north of the Raritan, from a detached garage behind a Metuchen home to a teardown lot in North Edison. The excavator does the breaking, the skid steer loads and cleans up, and debris leaves in the dump truck or a roll-off sized to the job.
What we protect
Neighbors, driveways, and trees you're keeping are protected. The work zone is set before the first wall drops, dust and debris stay on the lot, and the street is left the way we found it.
Demolition pricing ranges
Typical New Jersey ranges, for budgeting only: detached garages about $4 to $10 per square foot, attached garages near the top of that range, and full houses about $4 to $10 per square foot, roughly $6,000 to $25,000 for most homes. Sheds usually run $500 to $2,500 removed and hauled.
Disposal drives most of the cost. The number of truckloads, how much concrete and foundation comes out, whether the basement needs clean fill, and how close the equipment can get all affect the total, and abatement of regulated materials is priced separately. A site walk lets us count the loads, which is how we commit to one firm written price.
What happens after you call
From the site walk to the final cleanup
1. Site Walk
We visit the property by appointment, check access and any constraints, and go over your plans or what you have in mind.
2. Marking & Layout
The layout is set on the ground with laser accuracy. Depths, lines, and elevations are marked before any digging starts.
3. The Work
The right machine for the access comes in, ground protection goes down where needed, and disturbance to lawns, trees, and hardscape is kept to a minimum.
4. Clean Handover
You're left with a site ready for the next step and a yard that's still in one piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
As a market range, not a quote: detached garage demolition usually runs $4 to $10 per square foot, about $2,300 to $3,500 for a typical 24-by-24 two-car garage including haul-off. Attached garages cost more because the shared wall with the house must be protected and closed in. We give a firm price after a site visit.
Typical ranges are $4 to $10 per square foot, roughly $6,000 to $25,000 for most homes, and higher when asbestos or lead must be abated first. Basement backfill, foundation removal, access, and disposal all shift the number. Commercial buildings are priced per square foot the same way, after a walkthrough.
For houses, garages, and commercial buildings, yes. Your township's construction office issues the demolition permit and requires proof that gas, electric, water, and sewer are disconnected. Small sheds and decks may be simpler depending on the town. We go over your municipality's requirements during the site visit.
Older siding, roofing, flooring, and pipe insulation can contain asbestos, and commercial buildings need an inspection before demolition. Removal is work for a licensed abatement contractor: it's tested, removed, and cleared first, and then we take the structure down.
Yes. Pool fill-ins and full removals have a dedicated page explaining how we break the shell and compact the fill so the ground doesn't sink later.
